Residents in at least 17 Nairobi estates are experiencing water supply disruptions following a major pipeline leak in Kiambu County. The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company announced the emergency shutdown on June 26.
The interruption stems from a leak on the NCT Fresh Water Pipeline at Riabai, near Kirigiti. This forced the temporary closure of the Kigoro-Gigiri transmission pipeline.
The company stated that water supply will resume progressively after repairs. Affected areas include Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Upper Hill, Ngong Road, Madaraka, Lang'ata, Karen, Uthiru, Kawangware, Kangemi, Kibra, Ruai, Ngundu, Kamulu, and zones served by MAVWASCO and Oloolaiser Water Company.
Nairobi Water advised households and businesses to store water. Separately, its Lang'ata team is relocating the Magadi Road pipeline serving Lang'ata, Karen and Multimedia University after a recent burst. The move aims to ease future maintenance.
This follows a similar shutdown two weeks earlier that affected 14 estates after a leak at Gatundu.
