The National Police Service has warned of possible flooding in over 10 Nairobi estates amid ongoing heavy rains. Water levels in major rivers including Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi have risen rapidly. Residents in affected areas are urged to move to higher ground.
The National Police Service stated on April 29, 2026, that it is on high alert alongside other government agencies due to persistent rainfall raising water levels in key waterways.
The Nairobi, Mathare, Ngong, Kamiti and Athi rivers, all draining into the critically high Athi River system, pose increased flood risks. Neighborhoods near the Nairobi River at risk include Kileleshwa, Lang’ata, Ngara, Madaraka, Eastleigh and Kawangware. Kibera and South C along the Ngong River, Kasarani near Kamiti and Athi rivers, and Mathare are also threatened.
Further areas include Tatu City, Ruiru, Kitengela, Mlolongo and Syokimau near the Athi River. Sections of the Central Business District, Gikomba, Globe, Industrial Area, Kilimani, Westlands, Mukuru Kwa Reuben and Korogocho face risks too.
Residents are encouraged to relocate to higher ground if advised and follow evacuation orders. NPS warned against walking or driving through moving water, noting even shallow currents can cause harm. Last month, the government had warned that Nairobi Dam was at its limits and risked bursting its banks.
