The National Environment Management Authority issued improvement notices to two Nairobi facilities on May 27 after inspections revealed violations of environmental regulations.
NEMA environmental inspectors carried out routine checks in Nairobi’s Industrial Area and Kayole. They issued notices to Kenrom Chemicals Ltd and the Kayole Slaughterhouse.
Kenrom Chemicals Ltd was found non-compliant with the Management of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Materials Regulations 2024. The Kayole Slaughterhouse was discharging untreated effluent into a Nairobi River tributary. It was also operating without a valid Effluent Discharge License.
The slaughterhouse lacked proper personal protective equipment for workers. It had poor housekeeping and no solid waste tracking documents. NEMA stated that penalties for such violations include fines running into millions of shillings or imprisonment under the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act.
