Kenya's National Biosafety Authority continues registering genetically improved plants to help farmers cut production costs amid ongoing GMO debate.
National Biosafety Authority Director General Dr Ann Karimi said the agency ensures all GMO products undergo scientific evaluation before approval. Its role is neither to promote nor oppose the technology but to verify safety for humans livestock and the environment.
Bt cotton was approved in 2019 and is now grown in various counties. Bt maize has reached final evaluation stages while GMO cassava has completed field trials and remains under further review.
Court cases and misinformation have delayed approval of some products. The NBA has increased border inspections and strengthened cooperation with KALRO alongside public awareness campaigns.
