New Orleans chef Nini Nguyen returns for third Tournament of Champions stint

New Orleans chef Nini Nguyen is competing for the third time on Food Network's Tournament of Champions, aiming to advance further in the high-stakes cooking competition. The 39-year-old chef, who reached the quarterfinals in Season 6, faces new challenges including secret top-seeded opponents and the unpredictable randomizer in Season 7. The series airs Sundays at 7 p.m., with streaming available the next day on HBO Max and Discovery+.

Nini Nguyen, a cookbook author known for "Dac Biet: An Extra-Special Vietnamese Cookbook," is back in the kitchen for Season 7 of Food Network's Tournament of Champions, hosted by Guy Fieri. This single-elimination bracket features 32 of the nation's top chefs competing for $150,000 and a championship belt, with placements determined by prior competition results.

Nguyen's previous appearances include an early exit in the first round of Season 5 in 2024 and a run to the quarterfinals in Season 6 the year before. She described the experience as enjoyable yet intense: "I keep going back because not only do I want to win, I think the competition is really fun," she said while walking her dog in New Orleans. "It's like fun to be able to. I say 'fun' very loosely because it's sometimes stressful."

A key element is the randomizer, where Fieri spins wheels to select protein, produce, equipment, style, and a wildcard ingredient, creating unpredictable challenges. Nguyen noted that it levels the playing field: "The randomizer, it's stumped me before, but it's fun in regards to where it levels off the playing field. No matter who you're going against, it's not necessarily the most skilled—it's the quickest thinker."

Season 7 introduces top-seeded food world icons whose identities remain secret until they appear, adding surprise to head-to-head battles. To prepare, Nguyen reviews past episodes and studies unusual ingredients, as direct prediction is impossible.

She prefers facing unknown opponents to avoid overthinking: "I'd rather just focus on myself and try to put a good dish through." Regarding the prize, Nguyen, nearing 40, plans to use winnings to pursue motherhood as a single parent. She is also scouting locations for a Vietnamese restaurant, hoping to open by year's end despite economic concerns.
