Noah Kahan has secured his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with The Great Divide, which earned 389,000 equivalent album units in its debut week—the biggest week for a rock album since tracking began in 2014. Recorded amid the 29-year-old songwriter's mental health struggles including an OCD diagnosis, the album features collaborations with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and production from Aaron Dessner.
Noah Kahan's fourth full-length studio album, The Great Divide, debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart dated May 9, according to Luminate data for the week ending April 30. Released April 24, the set generated 389,000 equivalent album units in the U.S., comprising 212,000 streaming equivalent albums (SEA) from 215.37 million on-demand official streams, 175,000 pure album sales, and 2,000 track equivalent albums (TEA). This marks Kahan's biggest week by units and the largest streaming week of 2026 for any album. Vinyl sales hit 118,000 units—the best week ever for a rock album since 1991—boosted by nine variants, alongside three CD editions and a deluxe digital version with four bonus tracks. Its title track holds the top spot on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart for an 11th week, part of the album's strong chart run.Portions of the 17-track record were recorded at Fire Tower Farm near Nashville and Aaron Dessner's Long Pond Studio in upstate New York. Produced by Kahan, Dessner, and Gabe Simon, it explores relationships, mental health, and Vermont roots through motifs like bugs and porches. Bon Iver's Justin Vernon added backing vocals, banjo, and guitar on tracks including “Downfall,” with Dessner calling Kahan “one of the most brilliant songwriters we have today.”Creation was challenging: post-Stick Season tour burnout in September 2024 led Kahan to eye careers like teaching or groundskeeping. A March 2025 Joshua Tree trip sparked intrusive thoughts and an OCD diagnosis in therapy. “Joshua Tree was horrible,” he told Rolling Stone. Restarting Lexapro aided recovery and creativity. The 2022 viral hit “Stick Season” earned a Best New Artist Grammy nod; Stick Season re-enters the top 10 at No. 10 in its 179th week.Kahan splits time between Vermont and Nashville, cherishes privacy with wife Brenna Nolan, and funds mental health via the Busyhead Project ($6.6M+ raised). A sold-out stadium tour launches this summer, including Rolling Stone’s Stateside Festival on July 4. Self-deprecating, he jokes about his looks and farm fishing: “You find out who you are in the moments when you’re alone.” Kehlani's self-titled album debuted at No. 4 (69,000 units), and Michael Jackson's Thriller re-entered at No. 7 (45,000 units) off a biopic.
