Cleveland Guardians rookie Parker Messick took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night at Progressive Field before Leody Taveras led off with a single. The Guardians won 4-2, with closer Cade Smith allowing the inherited runners to score after replacing Messick. Messick earned a standing ovation from the crowd.
Parker Messick pitched eight innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out nine. He threw 112 pitches, the most by any pitcher in baseball this season. The 25-year-old left-hander has a 1.05 ERA over four starts and 25⅔ innings this year. A 2022 second-round pick from Florida State, Messick debuted last August and helped Cleveland claim the AL Central title down the stretch, posting a 2.72 ERA in seven starts.
