Colonel Silas Thoka told the Pretoria High Court he had no knowledge of any official complaint about a cellphone allegedly found with accused Bongani Ntanzi. Thoka, who commands Villieria Police Station, was giving evidence in the trial of Ntanzi and four others charged with the 2014 murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
The trial resumed on 12 May after a short delay caused by defence requests for missing police occurrence books. Only two of the three requested books had been supplied, defence lawyer Sipho Ramosepele informed the court.
Thoka said he was unaware of any documentation showing that a cellphone had been confiscated from Ntanzi’s cell or sent for analysis. In cross-examination he stated: “I have no information relating to that my lord” and added that any item found should have been registered.
Ramosepele also questioned whether records reflected Ntanzi being formally charged on 26 October 2020. Thoka replied that the occurrence book showed no such entry. Cross-examination by another defence counsel is scheduled to continue on 13 May.
