President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed Sisisi Tolashe as minister of social development. The move follows months of reports detailing misconduct in her office. Sindisiwe Chikunga has been named acting minister in the interim.
President Cyril Ramaphosa dismissed Sisisi Tolashe from her post on Thursday in terms of section 91(2) of the Constitution. The president’s office stated that reports in the media had prompted the decision.
Tolashe had faced scrutiny over two luxury SUVs donated by Chinese officials. These vehicles were registered in the names of her adult children rather than the ANC Women’s League, contrary to her statements to Parliament.
A further allegation involved a department employee hired as a food aide. She was reportedly required to work at Tolashe’s residence and transfer R7,000 each month to the minister’s daughter.
Sindisiwe Chikunga, minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, has been appointed acting minister pending a permanent replacement.
