The Republican Party will publish videos on social media and its deputies will join ceremonies to mark Carabinero Day on April 27. Javiera Rodríguez and Valentina Becerra will lead events in Santiago, while pushing measures to bolster the institution. This comes in the first year of President José Antonio Kast.
The Republican Party leadership, led by Senator Arturo Squella and Vicente Bruna, published videos on social media Sunday afternoon to highlight Carabinero Day. They note that sectors tried to weaken Carabineros when Chile needed order most.
Deputy Javiera Rodríguez, daughter of carabineros, will join officers from the Santiago Norte Prefecture for the flag-raising and attend a meeting with Carabineros widows led by government spokesperson Minister Mara Sedini. Deputy Valentina Becerra, married to a carabinero run over on duty, will visit the Non-Commissioned Officers School and tour district 13 units from 1:00 p.m. Both will attend the official ceremony at the Carabineros School.
With Deputy Sebastián Zamora, they form the “pro-carabineros” bench, which submitted to the Ministry of Security a “single vandal role” proposal and requests to improve the medical commission, reinstate acquitted carabineros, pay risk allowances, and end dubious grace pensions. Zamora stated: “Recognition alone is not enough: concrete measures are needed,” proposing a quarterly bonus and amending a decree to combine allowances.
In context, President José Antonio Kast led Sunday's commemoration of the second anniversary of the “Heroes of Arauco,” Carabineros Carlos Cisterna Navarro, Misael Vidal Cid, and Sergio Arévalo Lobo. “Today we can say justice has been done,” he said, calling to toughen penalties. Director General Marcelo Araya defended security plans and highlighted over 30 tons of drugs seized.
