Security Minister Martín Arrau visited two Carabineros officers hospitalized with serious injuries sustained on duty this Sunday. During the visit he reiterated the government's support for police forces and announced that urgency will be given this week to two bills.
Arrau met with Rodrigo Ruiz and Salomón Alcayaga at the Hospital de Carabineros. Ruiz was run over while participating in the arrest of a suspect for domestic violence. Alcayaga was seriously injured in a traffic accident.
The minister reported the meeting on his X account and expressed the government's support. “Behind every uniform there is a person, a family and a vocation of service that Chile must care for,” Arrau said.
He also announced that urgency will be given this week to two legislative initiatives. One increases penalties for attacks against Carabineros and the other extends privileged self-defense to officers when off duty. The measure is part of the agenda announced on Saturday by President José Antonio Kast's administration.
