Riot Games develops League Next update for 2027

Riot Games is undertaking a major overhaul of League of Legends, internally dubbed League Next, set for release in 2027. This project represents the most significant update to the game since its launch, focusing on technical and visual improvements without creating a sequel. Executives confirmed it is an enhancement to the existing title amid concerns over the game's aging infrastructure.

Riot Games has begun work on League Next, a comprehensive modernization of League of Legends scheduled for 2027, as reported by Bloomberg on December 18. In a video shared on the game's official X account, Executive Producer Paul Bellezza and Studio Head Andrei van Roon emphasized that this is not League of Legends 2. They stated: "We're often asked if we're going to make League of Legends 2 someday. And the answer to that has been, and remains, no."

The update addresses the game's aging elements, starting with changes in 2025, including the introduction of WASD key movement. Key technical shifts include ending the current launcher client and integrating the navigation client into the main game engine. This fusion aims to resolve historical connectivity issues and allow seamless rendering of complex elements like champion models.

Visually, Summoner’s Rift will undergo a complete overhaul, accompanied by gameplay adjustments. Pre-game systems, particularly runes, face significant redesigns, while the new-player experience receives a full rework to enhance accessibility. These changes are supported by a rebuilt technical architecture for greater flexibility in future updates.

Internally, Riot has reorganized teams, with the majority of the League of Legends staff now focused on the project. Bellezza and van Roon noted: "at this point, the majority of the League team are now working on [this]." Anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg highlighted concerns that the game is losing momentum, with one stating that VALORANT "makes more money."

The executives promised more details later this year, between MSI and Worlds, as part of an upcoming Dev Update after the holiday break. This initiative responds to online speculation and aims to revitalize the game's foundation.
