George Russell qualified sixth for the Monaco Grand Prix after losing out to teammate Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole position. The result extends Antonelli's championship lead to 43 points.
Kimi Antonelli set a lap of 1m12.051s to take pole, beating Max Verstappen by 0.043s. Russell finished four tenths behind in sixth place. Russell said after qualifying that he did not know what was going on with his driving. 'It's clearly something with my driving that's not helping the car at the moment,' he said. The Mercedes driver pointed to a difference in driving styles that has affected tire warm-up on low-energy circuits. Antonelli described his lap as a 'magic lap' and said he felt great throughout the session. Russell won the season-opening race in Melbourne. Antonelli has since won the next four grands prix.
