George Russell secured pole position for the Barcelona Grand Prix with a lap of 1m14.679s, ending Kimi Antonelli's run of five straight wins. Lewis Hamilton qualified second for Ferrari, 0.064s behind, while Antonelli took third.
Russell credited a "big reset" for his performance after a difficult period that included no points in the last two races. The Mercedes driver said he trusted his instincts rather than copying his team-mate's approach.
"I've not looked at a single piece of data the whole weekend," Russell told Sky Sports. "I've just driven the car and trusted my instincts."
Antonelli struggled to adapt his driving style and finished three tenths off the pace. An early red flag in Q3 followed Charles Leclerc's crash at Turn 4.
The result gives Russell a strong chance to close the 68-point championship gap to Antonelli in Sunday's race.
