Sandra Bullock teased the reason her character Sally Owens' love interest from the original film, played by Aidan Quinn, will not return in Practical Magic 2. Speaking at CinemaCon alongside Nicole Kidman, Bullock hinted that fans familiar with the first movie could guess why. The sequel premieres in theaters this September.
At CinemaCon, Sandra Bullock addressed the absence of Aidan Quinn's character, Investigator Gary Hallet, from Practical Magic 2. 'And if you know the original film, you can probably guess why,' Bullock said while promoting the sequel with onscreen sister Nicole Kidman, whose character is Gillian Owens. The 1998 romantic fantasy film, based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel, centers on the Owens family's curse: any man who loves an Owens woman dies tragically. In the original, Sally's father and first husband succumbed to it, though the story concluded with Sally and Gary together happily. The sequel explores the curse further as a new generation of Owens women uncovers family secrets. Quinn confirmed his non-involvement to Dublin's Spin 1038 radio station. 'No, I wasn’t asked; I would have said yes, but I wasn’t asked. Of course I would,' he said. Quinn described his time on the original fondly: 'lovely, lovely' experience working mostly with Bullock, calling both her and Kidman phenomenal. Bullock and Kidman reprise their roles, joined by returning aunts Frances and Bridget Owens, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. Joey King and Maisie Owens portray Sally's daughters Kylie and Antonia, with Lee Pace newly cast. Susanne Bier directs the Warner Bros. production.
