Sheinbaum urges us to focus on drug consumption

President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the United States on Monday to address its own drug consumption problem rather than focusing so much on Mexico. During her morning press conference, she also demanded a reduction in the flow of weapons and respect for national sovereignty.

Sheinbaum reacted to actions by the United States Department of Justice against Governor Rubén Rocha and the handover of Gerardo Mérida to American authorities. She stated that Mexico will not cover for anyone, yet questioned Washington’s excessive interest.

“Let them attend to their drug consumption problem there first,” the president declared. She noted that Trump’s new National Antidrug Strategy recognizes consumption for the first time as a public health issue.

The president also demanded an end to the inflow of high-power weapons reaching the cartels and action against money laundering. She reiterated that Mexico accepts information sharing but not operations by United States agencies on its territory.

Sheinbaum announced that United States Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin will visit Mexico on Thursday, May 21. She will later receive drug czar Sarah Carter at the National Palace on Monday, May 25.
