A 5-year-old boy died and two other children were injured in a shooting in the Pantanal neighborhood of Paraty on Sunday night.
The incident took place around 7:20 p.m. when three hooded men opened fire in a square where children were playing after watching the Brazil game. José Heitor Dias Cerqueira, aged 5, was killed. Another 5-year-old child remains in serious condition and was transferred to a higher-complexity facility, while a 15-year-old adolescent is in stable condition.
The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, through the 167th precinct, is investigating the case. Forensics collected two shell casings of 9-millimeter and .380 calibers. Witnesses reported that the suspects fled in a vehicle, as recorded by security cameras.
The Paraty city government stated that it mobilized health and social assistance teams to care for the victims and support their families. The administration requested priority in clarifying the facts and expressed solidarity with the victims' relatives.
