Uda leaders from the Mount Kenya region have demanded that Secretary General Hassan Omar resign immediately or face a petition to President Ruto for his removal.
Leaders led by Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a and Kiambaa MP John Njuguna Kawanjiku issued a joint statement on Wednesday May 27 demanding Omar resign within 48 hours. They said they would formally petition party leader President Ruto to dismiss him if he does not step down voluntarily.
Omar made controversial remarks last week during President Ruto's coastal tour blaming a nationwide matatu strike on one region. He later issued a public apology saying his words were taken out of context.
The leaders welcomed an NCIC investigation into the remarks and called for criminal prosecution for hate speech. Others including Eric Wamumbi and Veronica Maina said the position requires someone who unites Kenyans rather than divides them.
