The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed the arrest of Evans Kawala on Tuesday evening. Opposition figures had earlier alleged he was abducted.
Detectives from the Operations Support Unit apprehended the 33-year-old at a mall in Kayole, Nairobi. The DCI said Kawala faces allegations of making inflammatory public utterances aimed at President William Ruto that circulated online.
Siaya Governor James Orengo had stated on Tuesday that the Ruto administration abducted Kawala for speaking truth to power and demanded his immediate release. The DCI statement dismissed the abduction claims.
Kawala remains in custody awaiting arraignment. His remarks followed a security breach involving President Ruto in Ganze, Kilifi County, on Sunday.
