Ermittler der Operations Support Unit nahmen den 33-Jährigen in einem Einkaufszentrum in Kayole, Nairobi, fest. Nach Angaben der DCI werden Kawala aufhetzende öffentliche Äußerungen gegen Präsident William Ruto vorgeworfen, die im Internet verbreitet wurden.

Der Gouverneur von Siaya, James Orengo, hatte am Dienstag erklärt, die Regierung unter Ruto habe Kawala entführt, weil er die Wahrheit gesagt habe, und seine sofortige Freilassung gefordert. Die DCI wies die Entführungsvorwürfe in ihrer Stellungnahme zurück.

Kawala bleibt bis zu seiner Anklageerhebung in Gewahrsam. Seine Äußerungen folgten auf eine Sicherheitslücke, die am Sonntag Präsident Ruto in Ganze, im Kilifi County, betraf.
