UN officials have expressed deep concern over the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus in Central Jakarta on March 12, 2026. On Thursday evening, March 12, 2026, Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was attacked with caustic liquid by unidentified individuals in the Salemba area of Central Jakarta. The assault occurred after Andrie finished a recording activity at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office. The victim suffered burns on several parts of his body and is currently receiving medical treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM).
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated, “Very concerned about the horrific acid attack on Andrie Yunus.” He emphasized that perpetrators must be held accountable and human rights defenders must be protected while highlighting public issues without fear. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor called for a thorough investigation by Indonesian authorities, rejecting impunity in cases of violence against HR advocates.
Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai condemned the thuggish act, stating, “Premanisme must not be allowed to live in this country.” He urged police to investigate thoroughly so the victim and family receive justice, emphasizing civil society's role as checks and balances. Pigai indicated he might visit the victim.
DPR member Bonnie Triyana described the attack as a manifestation of HR emergency and anti-democracy, recalling past cases like the 1997/1998 activist kidnappings and Munir's 2004 murder. She demanded the arrest of perpetrators and intellectual actors, with charges of attempted murder due to 24 percent burns.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated the attack was planned and organized, threatening democracy. He called for investigation up to intellectual actors and noted President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to upholding law and HR without tolerating violence.
Central Jakarta Metro Police are investigating the case, with Polda Metro Jaya's Public Relations Head, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, confirming the incident involving dangerous liquid splashing.
