Uttarakhand Police have registered the first FIR invoking the Uniform Civil Code in a case alleging nikah halala along with dowry harassment and other offences.
The FIR was registered on April 4 at Bhagwanpur police station on a complaint by a woman named Shabana against her husband and in-laws. It initially covered sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women Act before investigators added UCC provisions after a month-long probe.
The final report filed on May 14 named nine accused and included Sections 32(1)(ii) and 32(1)(iii) of the Uttarakhand Civil Code. Police said evidence supported the addition of these clauses linked to the alleged practice.
A senior official noted that the proceedings may indicate how courts will interpret the new framework in matters involving personal law. Notices have been issued to the accused under relevant criminal procedure sections.
