The Vatican has opened an investigation into the Archbishop of Rabat, Cristóbal López Romero, following accusations of sexual assault by at least five women. The 74-year-old cardinal denies the claims and has temporarily stepped aside from his duties.
The accusations, spanning 2009 to 2024 in Morocco and Bolivia, include non-consensual touching, insistent hugs, and an attempted kiss, according to testimonies obtained by AFP. One complainant described physical gestures she perceived as inappropriate during her work with the Church.
López Romero, who denies committing assault, violence, or sexual harassment, has confirmed his cooperation with the Holy See investigation. In a statement, he announced he will step back from public celebrations and pastoral activities to avoid hindering the process.
No complaint has been filed with Moroccan justice, according to Vicar General Marc Helfer. The cardinal, viewed as a possible successor to Pope Francis, was among the most visible figures during the May 2025 conclave.
