Chilean journalist Abraham Santibáñez Martínez died at the age of 88. Known for his career in interpretive journalism, he received the profession's highest honor in 2015.

Santibáñez worked at outlets including Revista Ercilla, Revista Hoy and Diario La Nación, where he served as director from 1990 to 1994. He championed freedom of expression and joined the 1978 Vicaría de la Solidaridad commission that verified the Lonquén ovens during the dictatorship.

He taught at the University of Chile, the Pontifical Catholic University and Universidad Diego Portales, where he helped establish the School of Journalism. He chaired the Colegio de Periodistas from 2008 to 2010.

He received the Alejandro Silva de la Fuente Award in 1994 and joined the Academia Chilena de la Lengua in 2009. His death occurred on June 15, 2026.
