Spain's State Meteorological Agency has issued a special warning for the third heatwave of the summer, with temperatures that could exceed 44 or 45 °C on Wednesday and Thursday.

The episode will affect the southeastern third, the Guadalquivir and Ebro valleys, the depressions of the northeast, the Pyrenees valleys and the interior of Mallorca. It will last at least until Thursday 23 July.

According to AEMET, “temperatures may reach extreme values, exceeding even 44 or 45 °C punctually on Wednesday and Thursday”. The agency has noted that uncertainty is very high and will update the information tomorrow.

During the preceding weekend, yellow warnings for high temperatures have been activated in the Community of Madrid, with highs of up to 38 degrees in the south. AEMET spokesperson Rubén Del Campo has warned of a very high or extreme risk of forest fires in much of the country.
