Assumption and UP students urge Senator Legarda to reflect on values

Students from Assumption College San Lorenzo and the University of the Philippines have called on Senator Loren Legarda to reflect on the principles she once upheld. The appeals follow her vote for a new Senate president amid the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

The Assumption Student Council issued a statement on May 15, 2026, asking Legarda to consider the values she demonstrated as a student and public figure. The council noted that the institution removed her portrait from its Wall of Empowered Women, stating that recognition must reflect character and moral courage.

A student group at UP Diliman, the UP Broadcasting Association, released a similar statement on May 12. It said Legarda's recent political choices contradict the principles of accountability and democratic responsibility taught at the university.

Legarda, an alumna of both schools, voted on May 11 for Senator Alan Peter Cayetano as the new Senate president. The vote occurred on the same day the House of Representatives impeached Vice President Sara Duterte. The Assumption Board of Trustees also issued a broader call to alumnae in public service to return to core values.
