Björklöven, the regular-season winners and final favorites, took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven HockeyAllsvenskan final by beating BIK Karlskoga 4-2 at home in Umeå—the first top-tier hockey there in 25 years. The hard-fought victory came despite Björklöven racking up 16 penalty minutes during the game and a post-game match penalty, granting BIK numerous power-play chances.
Daniel Brodin scored the go-ahead 2-1 goal early in the second period, with Oscar Tellström quickly making it 3-1—his second of the night. Gustav Possler sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final seconds.
However, discipline was a major concern. Björklöven's penalties allowed BIK to score once on the power play (the third in quick succession), though Björklöven's penalty kill otherwise held strong. The team's total reached 36 minutes after goaltender Olle Eriksson Ek received a match penalty for abuse of officials. Domarchef Björn Wettergren confirmed no further punishment, but warned of a one-game suspension on repeat.
Joel Mustonen expressed relief but stressed the issue: “It won't hold, we don't even need to comment more than that,” he told TV4, praising the PK but noting areas to polish. Coach Magnus Bogren agreed, saying such penalties “will not work” long-term, while commending 5-on-5 play and third-period dominance. BIK coach Dennis Hall lamented losing the lead on a turnover during their power play, leading to lost precision: “After that we were so-so... We could have pushed harder in the third."
Brodin, in his fourth straight final, added: "We can do much better. We stray a bit. Unnecessary."
Game 2 is Friday in Umeå, as Björklöven eyes SHL promotion.
