Bryan Cranston needed body double for Malcolm in the Middle pilot

Bryan Cranston required a body double to film a key scene in the pilot episode of Malcolm in the Middle due to challenges with prosthetic hair. The scene introduces his character Hal in a humorous, unconventional manner during breakfast. Cranston will reprise the role in an upcoming Hulu revival.

Bryan Cranston portrayed Hal, the eccentric husband and father, in the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, which aired years before his role in Breaking Bad. In the series pilot, Hal appears naked in the kitchen, reading a newspaper while his wife Lois, played by Jane Kaczmarek, shaves his body hair amid their sons' disgust. This introduction highlights Hal's impulsive and neurotic tendencies, establishing him as subservient to Lois and lacking typical boundaries, which contributes to the family's dysfunctional dynamic.

Cranston expressed enthusiasm for the gag, stating to the Los Angeles Times, "That was the first thing that caught me in the script." However, replicating Hal's extreme hairiness proved difficult during production. Two makeup artists spent three hours applying yak hair to Cranston's body using glue, but the prosthetic did not work as intended for the shaving sequence.

Reflecting on the filming, Cranston said, "Then when we did the shaving scene — the close-up of Jane shaving my back is not me." He explained, "They tried to do it, but the glue on the hair wouldn't let the razor go through it. So they actually had a casting session for hairy backs. They picked a guy whose body shape was somewhat similar to mine. Then they shaved his back."

The show centers on Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz, a child prodigy navigating family chaos. Hal's character often exacerbates the instability through his childish nature. Cranston is scheduled to return as Hal in the revival series Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, with all four episodes premiering on Hulu on April 10, 2026.
