Chilean arrested for 11th backpack theft at Guarulhos airport

A 65-year-old Chilean man was detained on Tuesday at São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport on suspicion of stealing a passenger's backpack. This marks his 11th similar incident at the airport since last year. Police recovered all stolen items.

Winton Ricardo Fuentes Yanes, 65, was caught on surveillance cameras taking advantage of a 58-year-old passenger's distraction to steal her backpack. After the theft, he tried to flee, disobeyed a stop order, and resisted arrest by pushing a police officer before being subdued.

Recovered items include a notebook, books, charger, and R$ 100. Police are also investigating him for another theft on Saturday, when he took headphones, a back brace, chargers, a necklace, and R$ 600 from a 29-year-old passenger.

Since August 2025, the Chilean faces nine police inquiries for similar property crimes at the airport, using the same method. He was arrested in November 2025 for qualified theft and released on provisional liberty in February. Lacking an entry record in Brazil, he is in irregular status and was using a false name.

The cases were filed at the 3rd Tourist Police Station (Deatur). The State Security Secretariat (SSP) noted the integration between the airport's monitoring system and Civil Police. The case was referred to Federal Police to check his migration status, with potential deportation.
