The Chicago Cubs are focusing on adding pitchers as they prepare for the Aug. 3 trade deadline while managing multiple injuries.
The team has faced a rigid position-player roster and increasing absences among its pitchers this season. Chicago sits in the National League Wild Card race and trails the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said the club's performance over the next month will shape its approach. “Of course, our play is going to dictate a level of aggressiveness, and needs as well,” he said.
The Cubs recently acquired left-hander David Peterson from the New York Mets. Several starters, including Jameson Taillon and Edward Cabrera, are on the injured list with hamstring issues, while others such as Ben Brown and Justin Steele face longer recoveries. Bullpen options including Daniel Palencia and Phil Maton are also expected back before the end of July.
Additional relief help could be targeted at the deadline to stabilize a group that has seen frequent changes.
