The Democratic Alliance has approached the Eastern Cape High Court to review and set aside new electricity tariffs in Nelson Mandela Bay, arguing that residents were denied proper consultation.
The DA filed court papers on Friday, claiming the municipality unlawfully removed the Inclining Block Tariff. This change led to electricity bill increases of up to 30 percent for many households instead of the promised average of 10 percent.
DA Nelson Mandela Metro candidate Retief Odendaal stated that the application was filed in the Gqeberha High Court. He noted that the matter is scheduled to be heard on 4 August.
Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the municipality is consulting on the tariff application. She added that any miscalculations would be addressed.
