David Leitch confirms Gears of War movie is progressing

Director David Leitch has assured fans that the Gears of War movie adaptation will happen, citing a strong script draft and full support from Netflix. In an interview with Collider, he noted that game developer The Coalition is enthusiastic about the project. The update comes as The Coalition prepares to release Gears of War: E-Day later this year.

David Leitch, known for directing The Fall Guy, revealed details on the long-in-development Gears of War film during promotion for his new movie, How to Rob a Bank. He was in talks last summer to direct and produce alongside Kelly McCormick through their 87North banner, partnering with The Coalition. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts is handling the script. {target='_blank'} {target='_blank'} {target='_blank'} {target='_blank'} {target='_blank'} Leitch emphasized the project's momentum in his Collider interview: > Gears of War, I think, is going to happen. We have a great draft that's in progress that's in really great shape. The studio's more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100 percent behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it's all lining up that that movie will happen. Netflix secured the adaptation rights in November 2022, reviving efforts after New Line Cinema's failed attempts that began in 2007 and stalled by 2019. Meanwhile, The Coalition and People Can Fly are developing Gears of War: E-Day, with John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro returning as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, respectively. The game is slated for release later in 2026.
