Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced on Tuesday that Egypt will launch the Greening Cairo project to turn evacuated urban spaces into green areas.
The announcement came during a meeting at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital. The project aims to increase the per capita share of green spaces in the city.
Madbouly said that after ongoing restoration works finish and surrounding areas are upgraded, central Cairo will become an open attraction for global tourists. It will host cultural and artistic activities, similar to the recently launched Art Street in the downtown district.
The meeting also reviewed efforts to revive Islamic and historical landmarks. Officials including Minister of Awqaf Usama Al-Azhary and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber presented updates on restoring mosques, shrines, and infrastructure in historical zones, following directives from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
