Author Elmore Leonard was not immediately fond of the cowboy hat worn by Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens in the FX series Justified. The writer expressed his disapproval directly to the actor during production. Leonard later came to accept the look after some time.
Olyphant recalled in an interview that the character in Leonard's book had a specific hat. He chose a different western-style option instead and noted that Leonard hated the change at first. The author visited the set and made jokes suggesting Raylan should skip the hat entirely.
