EU asylum reform enters into force at midnight

Stricter asylum rules have taken effect across the EU at midnight. They enable faster procedures and more consistent deportations.

The new rules aim to prevent asylum seekers from moving onward within the EU. This targets secondary migration from countries like Italy or Greece to Germany.

The Common European Asylum System now includes a solidarity mechanism. EU states with high arrivals will be relieved through financial contributions, in-kind aid or taking in asylum seekers.

Germany does not have to contribute to the solidarity pool this year. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner said the system strengthens trust among member states and gives Europe more control.

A new external border facility starts operations today at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. A total of 374 places are available in such accommodations.
