The Federal Government has arrested two suspected illegal miners in Osun State as part of efforts to curb unlawful activities in the mining sector.
The arrests took place during a coordinated enforcement operation at an illegal mining site in Ileki-Ijesa along the Ile-Ife/Ilesa Road. Officials from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, working with security agencies, detained Danladi Isa and Musa Kabiru, both in their twenties and described as casual workers. Mining equipment including motorcycles, generators, and washing tools was confiscated, and the site was sealed off.
Southwest Zonal Mines Officer Ajibade Ganiyu said the action supports compliance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act and protects the environment. Osun State Mines Officer Wasiu Adeboye warned that sponsors and perpetrators would face the full weight of the law.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr Dele Alake noted that the Tinubu administration has prioritised sector reforms. He said more than 300 illegal miners have been arrested and over 150 suspects prosecuted nationwide since the Mining Marshals were established.
