Mercedes driver George Russell has identified McLaren as a serious contender ahead of this weekend's Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix after strong showings in Friday practice at the Red Bull Ring.
Kimi Antonelli topped both practice sessions for Mercedes. In FP2 he finished 0.237 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and a further tenth clear of Lando Norris.
Russell ended FP2 in sixth place after a mistake on his quickest lap. He said McLaren's pace in race trim was a real surprise and highlighted their strength in hot conditions over recent seasons.
McLaren technical director Neil Houldey acknowledged the comments but stressed that Ferrari and an upgraded Red Bull also remain in contention. Piastri described his team as best of the rest behind Mercedes heading into Saturday.
