German eventing coach Peter Thomsen recovering after riding accident

German national eventing coach Peter Thomsen is recovering in hospital following a riding fall on 14 June. The 65-year-old double Olympic gold medallist has been receiving treatment since the accident. Federation officials report that his condition has improved significantly in recent days.

The German equestrian federation confirmed that Thomsen remains under medical care. A spokesperson stated on 22 June that he is on the road to recovery.

Thomsen was unable to attend the German championships in Luhmühlen last weekend. The coaching team handled his duties with support from team manager Dr Annette Wyrwoll.

Rodolphe Scherer has temporarily taken over as head coach. He will be assisted by Anne-Kathrin Pohlmeier, Lara Weber and Andreas Dibowski ahead of the World Championships in Aachen in August.

Thomsen won team gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He served as national coach after Hans Melzer retired at the end of 2021.
