The grenke Chess Festival returns to the Karlsruhe Congress Centre over Easter weekend, from April 2 to 6, 2026. Organizers report a milestone achievement: more than 3,000 participants have signed up well before the tournament begins, outpacing previous years' totals and confirming the event's rising popularity.
This edition maintains its dual format, hosting the grenke Chess Open for classical play and the grenke Freestyle Chess Open simultaneously. Both are nine-round Swiss-system events with classical time controls and equal participation rules. A unique option allows competitors to transfer from the classical to the freestyle section through the fifth round.
The freestyle open introduces new stakes, acting as a qualifier for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027. The A Open winner secures a spot, while the top three women qualify for the inaugural Freestyle Women’s World Championship.
Prize money adds to the draw, with €70,000 allocated to the Chess Open and €215,000 to the Freestyle Open, including €60,000 for its victor. The participant list boasts elite names: Magnus Carlsen, a multiple world champion across formats who won all nine games last year; Germany's Vincent Keymer; recent standout Nodirbek Abdusattorov; Levon Aronian; and Hans Niemann, among others.
Beyond the boards, side activities will include simultaneous exhibitions, live commentary, fan meet-and-greets, and professional player interactions. As the Candidates Tournaments unfold elsewhere, Karlsruhe positions itself as a key hub for the global chess community, blending open access with high-level competition.
