Bleecker Street’s Hadestown: The Musical earned $9.7 million in its opening weekend on 1,949 screens. The live capture ranks as the second-biggest opening for such a show since Hamilton. Distributor Crosswalk and partner LD Entertainment are extending the run due to strong demand.
The film, directed by Brett Sullivan and captured from the West End production, features the original principal cast. It holds a Certified Fresh rating with a 99 percent audience score. The stage version, written by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, won eight Tony Awards in 2019 and the 2020 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
Other indie titles performed solidly over the same period. Motor City grossed $1.6 million at 1,600 theaters. Neon’s Her Private Hell opened to $530,000 on 675 screens.
American Pachuco: The Legend Of Luis Valdez added theaters in its second week and is estimated to gross $32,300 on 13 screens. Reading Lolita in Tehran earned $47,500 at 13 locations in week two for a $73,500 total.
