Harry Styles launched his record-breaking Wembley Stadium residency on June 12 with a performance that honored the late artist David Hockney and reflected on his One Direction origins.
The singer played the first of 12 shows at the London venue as part of his Together, Together world tour. The run will surpass Coldplay's previous record of 10 concerts in a calendar year.
Styles paid tribute to Hockney, who died on June 11 at age 88, by displaying a quote from the painter on the big screens before performing "Aperture." He also spoke about his early days, noting that his X Factor audition took place at the nearby Wembley Arena in 2010, which led to the formation of One Direction.
Shania Twain opened the show, and Styles reworked several tracks with interpolations from artists including Underworld and Talking Heads. The set closed with "Little Freak" from Harry’s House and ended with "Sign of the Times" and "As It Was."
Styles dedicated a portion of ticket sales to support UK grassroots music venues. Additional London dates are scheduled through early July.
