Itamaraty summoned Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi on Sunday to express repulsion at Javier Milei’s statements in São Paulo. The Argentine president called President Lula “presidiário” and minister Alexandre de Moraes “lixo careca” during a PL event on Saturday. The Brazilian government also recalled its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations.
Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira received ambassador Daniel Raimondi on Sunday afternoon to convey official repulsion and demand explanations about Milei’s conduct on Brazilian soil.
In a statement, Itamaraty described the insults as unprecedented and lamented the episode involving Brazil’s main trading partner after 203 years of friendship.
Milei made the remarks on Saturday during the convention that launched Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential candidacy. He also accused the Brazilian government of funding an anti-Argentina campaign, a claim made without evidence in an interview with Radio Mitre.
Fernando Haddad described Milei’s behavior as incompatible with relations between the two countries and said disrespect for institutions cannot be normalized.
