Lula calls Flávio Bolsonaro a traitor over document sent to US

President Lula criticized Senator Flávio Bolsonaro on Thursday for sending a document to the US government requesting tariffs be postponed until after Brazilian elections.

Lula stated that the Bolsonaro family's action is unacceptable and represents submission to American interests. "Asking for tariffs against our country to be postponed until after the elections is yet another attitude of traitors of the homeland," the president said in a post on X.

The document sent by Flávio to the USTR proposes suspending 25% surcharges on Brazil until after the 2026 elections. The senator also suggested eliminating tariffs on ethanol and reducing taxes for credit card companies, in addition to proposing that Brazil free itself from Mercosur rules.

Lula reinforced that there is no justification for the tariffs now or later and defended national sovereignty, stating that Pix will not be handed over to foreign interests. The Brazilian government continues talks with American authorities to try to avoid the measures.
