James Wood hit his first career grand slam in dramatic inside-the-park fashion to spark a comeback for the Washington Nationals. The 9-6 victory over the New York Mets came on Tuesday at Nationals Park after the team trailed by five runs early.
The Nationals fell behind 5-0 in the second inning before Wood stepped up with the bases loaded against Nolan McLean. He drove a first-pitch sweeper that traveled a Statcast-projected 379 feet toward the outfield wall. Left fielder Nick Morabito and center fielder Tyrone Taylor converged on the ball, but it bounced off Morabito's glove after he collided with the wall and rolled away.
