Japanese influencer Reika Kuroki indicted on tax evasion charges

Tokyo-based advertising firm Solarie, its president and influencer Reika Kuroki, and two executives have been indicted for evading around ¥157 million in corporate and other taxes. On December 26, 2025, public prosecutors in Tokyo indicted Tokyo-based advertising company Solarie, its president Reika Kuroki—who is also a social media influencer—and two executives on charges of evading ¥157 million in corporate and other taxes. The three were not arrested. As Reika Miyazaki on Instagram, Kuroki has around 500,000 followers and promotes cosmetics and other products on the platform at the request of advertising agencies, receiving fees through Solarie, informed sources said.

According to the indictment, Kuroki allegedly concealed a total of ¥496 million in income over the year through January 2021 and the two years through January 2024, evading ¥126 million in corporate and other taxes. She is also alleged to have evaded ¥31 million in consumption and other taxes between February 2022 and January 2024. The evaded funds are believed to have been used for the company's operating costs.

In an Instagram post on the day of the indictment, Kuroki said she is "reflecting deeply on her conduct and will swiftly make necessary corrections and pay taxes." However, in another comment, she stated that she has left the matter to her lawyer and cannot answer questions in detail. The case stems from a complaint filed by the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors' Office.

This incident highlights the growing scrutiny on tax compliance among social media influencers amid their rising prominence in Japan. Kuroki's substantial following underscores the scale of her influence.

S&P Global Ratings has voiced concerns that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's proposal to cut the sales tax on food purchases could reduce Japan's revenues and undermine its finances in the long term. The remarks come amid a historic rise in superlong bond yields following Takaichi's announcement to lower the sales tax on food for two years if she succeeds in a snap election. Rain Yin, director of sovereign ratings based in Singapore, warned that such tax cuts are not a one-off impact and would exacerbate the fiscal situation if economic and revenue growth weakens amid structural increases in expenditures.
