Joey Fatone details boy band challenges in new documentary

Joey Fatone of NSYNC has opened up about the difficulties of boy band life in the new documentary special Boy Band Confidential. The four-part series, executive produced by Fatone, premieres on ID on April 13 and 14. It features interviews with other former boy band members discussing exploitation and personal struggles.

NSYNC member Joey Fatone described his time in a boy band as both rewarding and challenging in a press release for the upcoming documentary Boy Band Confidential. “Being in a boy band was one of the greatest experiences of my life, but it also came with challenges we didn’t always understand at the time,” Fatone said. “This project gave all of us a chance to reflect, to be honest, and to share what really happened behind the spotlight.” The special, which Fatone executive produced, includes interviews with fellow NSYNC singer Lance Bass, Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean, 98 Degrees' Nick Lachey, and Boyz II Men's Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman, along with other singers, managers, and industry insiders. O-Town's Ashley Parker Angel shared a stark moment from the trailer, saying, “I was sitting on the 38th-floor balcony of my New York apartment, and I just thought about jumping off.” The series explores the music industry's dark side during the 1990s boy band era, covering issues like abuse, addiction, and financial manipulation. ID President Jason Sarlanis stated that the project offers “an honest, unfiltered look at a cultural phenomenon that shaped an entire generation,” highlighting “the pressures, vulnerabilities, and surprising realities of life at the height of pop stardom.” The documentary aims to provide rare access to these stories beyond mere nostalgia.
