Judge Pedraz charges Civil Guard director with malfeasance

Magistrate Santiago Pedraz has this week charged Mercedes González, director of the Civil Guard, and her deputy Manuel Llamas with alleged malfeasance and obstruction of justice in the Leire Díez case.

The decision follows a search ordered by Pedraz weeks ago at Civil Guard headquarters. Agents sought internal files and visitor records linked to former socialist militant Leire Díez.

González has acknowledged two meetings with Díez between September 2024 and April 2025, including coffees in Madrid, but denied further contacts. The case file mentions possible additional encounters and messages suggesting attempts to influence probes.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor questions the use of three internal reserved inquiries opened between November 2024 and September 2025. UCO commanders describe them as unusual and potentially intimidating.

The judge has summoned González and Llamas as investigated parties on the 16th. Other commanders involved in similar events have not been charged.
