Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has opened a separate piece in the Begoña Gómez case to investigate possible crimes of prevarication and fraud against EU interests in a contract awarded to a company of Juan Carlos Barrabés.
The investigation focuses on irregularities detected in the tender for a Red.es contract worth 4.05 million euros financed with FEDER funds. The file, awarded to a UTE in which a Barrabés company participated alongside KPMG, omitted the requirement for a white paper demanded in the specifications.
Peinado first issued a providencia on June 18 that included all participants from the main case, causing confusion. Hours later he published a second providencia clarifying that the procedure is directed solely against Barrabés and not, for the moment, against Begoña Gómez.
The European Public Prosecutor referred the UCO report to the judge after declining its competence. The main case against Begoña Gómez is already concluded and pending the order to open oral trial.
