American tennis player Madison Keys has drawn criticism for remarks about Independence Day following her Wimbledon victory on July 4.
Madison Keys defeated compatriot Amanda Anisimova 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a comeback match on Center Court at Wimbledon. The result marked her first appearance on the venue's main show court and advanced her to a fourth-round matchup against Linda Noskova scheduled for Monday.
In her on-court interview, Keys was asked about plans for the Fourth of July. She replied, “No, I have no plans. No one really cares about the 4th of July, obviously, so when you’re not in the States, it’s just kind of another day,” while laughing.
The comments prompted strong negative reactions from fans online. Some described the remarks as ungrateful or out of touch, with one writing that Keys had failed to represent the United States properly on the national holiday.
Keys has not issued any public response to the criticism as of the latest reports.
