Marcos tells new NBI chief to make agency stronger

President Marcos has directed the newly appointed National Bureau of Investigation director Melvin Matibag to make the agency a stronger instrument in stopping crime, attaining justice, securing peace, and guarding national interest. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto conveyed this directive as Matibag formally assumed the post on Friday. Recto expressed confidence in Matibag's leadership based on his prior experience in government roles.

In a statement on Monday, Executive Secretary Ralph Recto shared President Marcos's directive to Melvin Matibag, the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Recto expressed confidence that Matibag would uphold his oath and the high standards of service required for the role.

"I say this with confidence because he brings with him experience in equally challenging government jobs he performed in the past, with distinction and dedication," Recto said. He added that Matibag possesses deep respect for and knowledge of the law, which is a hallmark of the NBI as an effective crimefighting unit.

Matibag previously served as Cabinet secretary under former President Rodrigo Duterte. He was also the secretary-general of PDP-Laban, Duterte's political party, which is now at odds with the Marcos administration. Matibag resigned from that position in 2023.

Meanwhile, Recto thanked Lito Magno, who had been the NBI's officer-in-charge since October of last year following the resignation of former director Jaime Santiago. "As we wish director Matibag good luck on his new calling, we would like to thank director Lito Magno for his service, which he rendered with integrity, and will continue to do so, in the finest NBI tradition," Recto stated.

Matibag's appointment comes amid the administration's ongoing efforts to bolster law enforcement agencies amid challenges in security and justice.
